President's Message
A message from our Federation President

Paul Christensen
President
Federation of Danish Associations in Canada
Kære venner, dear friends,
As we move through the seasons of our shared life as Danes in Canada, each of us travels a unique path filled with challenges, accomplishments, and important crossroads. One of the most important crossroads we now face together is how to keep our Danish heritage vibrant while our communities grow and change across this vast country.
For more than four decades, the Federation of Danish Associations in Canada has brought together clubs and societies from coast to coast, building a strong network of friendship, culture, and mutual support. Our annual conferences, local events, and heritage activities are possible only because of the dedication of volunteers and leaders in every association. You have created a living tapestry of Danish life in Canada—rooted in tradition, yet open to new ideas.
Our current theme, "Getting Young Danes Involved," is both a call to action and a promise. It calls on young Danish-Canadians—whether their connection to Denmark comes through parents, grandparents, or further back—to step into the life of our clubs and the Federation with their ideas, energy, and talents. And it is a promise from all of us in leadership that there will be genuine room at the table: space to contribute, to lead, and to help shape the future of our community.
At the same time, we must recognize and honour the foundations laid by our existing associations. Our goal is not to replace longstanding traditions, but to build on them: to pair experience with innovation, and to blend the wisdom of those who have served for many years with the perspectives of those just beginning their journey. Each local club—large or small, urban or rural—has a role to play in inviting youth into planning committees, event organizing, cultural programming, and even national discussions about where the Federation is headed.
"Getting Young Danes Involved" also means creating activities that feel meaningful and accessible. That might include cultural festivals and folk dancing, but also newer initiatives such as digital storytelling, social media projects, contemporary Danish film or design events, volunteer exchanges between clubs, and leadership opportunities that fit the realities of younger generations. When our associations work together and share ideas, we can offer a rich variety of ways to be actively Danish in Canada.
I am deeply grateful to the many volunteers, board members, and supporters who have given so much of their time to our organizations over the years. Your commitment has preserved our language, our songs, our traditions, and our sense of community. Now I ask each association, each delegate, and each family to take one more step: reach out to the young people in your circle, ask for their input, and invite them into real responsibility.
Together, across all our member societies, we can ensure that being Danish in Canada remains not only a cherished memory, but a living, evolving experience—something that is exciting and relevant for our children and grandchildren.
Thank you for your dedication to the Federation and to one another. I look forward to working with you as we continue Getting Young Danes Involved and strengthening every Danish association across our country.
Med venlig hilsen,
Paul Christensen

Our Story
The Danish Federation was established at Sunset Villa in Puslinch, Ontario, on June 7, 1981, with the purpose of bringing together all existing Danish organizations in Canada, to create a permanent network of cooperation.
The Federation is a "Club of Clubs", and it is therefore the national umbrella organization of the Danes in Canada. Today, the Federation is made up of over 30 member organizations across Canada.
Our member organizations include churches, senior homes, Guards' Associations, business associations, chambers of commerce, fraternities, historical societies, museums and social clubs.
The Danish Federation was formed to strengthen personal and institutional contacts, to exchange ideas and experiences, and to cooperate on joint projects that could not be handled by one organization alone.
Founding Members (1981)
Thirteen people representing Danish organizations from Montreal to Vancouver gathered at Sunset Villa to establish the Federation:
- Les Bonke
- Eva Terp
- Ole Larsen
- Jonna Melander
- Poul B. Christensen
- Rolf Christensen
- Svend Berg
- Jorgen Birk Andersen
- Esther Machacynski
- Alice Lyvang
- Martha Larsen
- Herbert Rasmussen

Federation Song
We have formed a Federation,
and together we have bound
many Dane Associations,
which in Canada are found.
And with all Canadians here
it's our hope that we can share
culture and tradition.
Yes, we will extend our hand,
hope we from our chosen land
will earn recognition.
